Study shows less than half of UK adults have acceptable oral hygiene routine

Tue, 20 Mar 2012 04:00:00 EST

Figures revealed by the Adult Dental Health survey indicate that products like mouthwash and dental floss are not being used as part of an all round dental hygiene routine by a significant portion of adults in the UK.

The study reported that just 31% of people use mouthwash, whilst only 22% regularly use floss. The results of the survey also revealed that 42% of adults only use a toothbrush and toothpaste, with only 27% saying they use an electric brush.

Speaking in reaction to the findings, Dr Nigel Carter of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: 'When you look at the figures presented, it is abundantly clear why so many people have oral health problems.

'Using interdental brushes, floss, or tape at least once a day will help to remove plaque and debris from between the teeth where the toothbrush can't reach.

'Brushing alone will only clean around 60% of the tooth surface, so it is important to remember there are products available to help you establish and develop a good oral health routine.'

But oral health and hygiene routines don't just impact upon the health of natural teeth, they also affect the longevity of dentures and dental implants, as the British Association of Clinical Dental Technology (BACDT) has been keen to point out.

Richard Daniels, CEO of the BACDT, said: 'Just like natural teeth, dentures can provide a home for millions of bacteria, which can cause plaque.

'Removing your dentures to brush after meal times can help prevent this by dislodging food particles as well as letting your gums rest. Also remember to always brush and rinse your dentures before soaking.

'But bear in mind that you should never use normal toothpaste on dentures. There are plenty of specialist cleaning products available that should be part of a denture wearer's oral hygiene regime.'

The battle to improve dental health in Britain continues.

The BACDT is a not for profit organisation representing Clinical Dental Technicians who are registered and regulated by the General Dental Council.
