TELUS Invests $800,000 to Bring Wireless Service to Hwy 3/95 Near Cranbrook

Thu, 15 Nov 2012 10:04:04 EST

Cranbrook, B.C. – As part of a strategic partnership with the Province, TELUS has invested $800,000 to bring new wireless coverage to more than 14 kilometres of Highway 3/95 between Yahk and Moyie.

The site southeast of Moyie Lake Provincial Park is now live, providing service to a stretch of Highway 3/95 as well as homes and businesses in the area.

'At TELUS, we know how important wireless services are, and continue to make significant investments in our networks to bring them to our customers travelling the Crowsnest Highway and right across Canada,' said Steve Jenkins, TELUS general manager for the Southern Interior. 'Our significant investment in Yahk and Moyie gives motorists, as well as area residents and businesses, the convenience of making hands-free wireless calls along a well-traveled stretch highway, expands access to 911, and allows for great broadband service where it may not be possible to build wired Internet access.'

The project is part of the 10-year Connecting British Columbia agreement signed with the Province of B.C. earlier last year. Under the terms of the contract TELUS will connect more than 1,700 kilometres of highway with wireless service.

'This is fantastic news for everyone who travels through the Crowsnest area,' said Citizens' Services and Open Government Minister Ben Stewart. 'By working with TELUS, we're providing new wireless coverage along unconnected highways – and that means safer travelling for rural families and businesses.'

'The stretch of Highway 3/95 between Yahk and Moyie is well traveled both by locals and those en route to beautiful destinations, such as Moyie Lake Provincial Park,' said Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay-East. 'Having access to cellular service along that road will provide a measure of comfort and safety for all motorists in the area.'

This significant investment is part of $3 billion in infrastructure and facilities upgrades being made across British Columbia through 2014 and builds upon the $26 billion TELUS has already invested in operations and technology throughout the province since 2000.
