Aflatoxin is a dangerous mycotoxin produced by molds. It is toxic and considered to be a carcinogen if too much is consumed. The compound is produced by fungi that grow on whole grains,  fruits, and nuts, and therefore it can be found in a variety of food products including, dried fruits, peanut butter, spices and cereals.

'At a low dose, aflatoxin is not considered a problem, but high doses have been associated with cancer, specifically in the liver,' states Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL.
