Franklin clocked an impressive 58.33s for gold followed by Australia's Emily Seebohm in 58.68 for silver and Japan's Aya Terakawa finishing in 58.83 for bronze.

20 minutes before the start of her 100 meter backstroke final, Franklin had just completed qualifying for the women's 200 meter freestyle finals. Between events, 14-time gold medalist Michael Phelps came over to encourage his fellow American teammate.
