Florida IAQ Consultant Helps Identify Pet Allergens

Mon, 30 Jul 2012 10:50:43 EST

In the United States there are well over 100 million pets comprised of dogs, cats, birds and other animals.  For many people their pets are a significant part of the family, but homes with pets can also result in indoor air quality issues, allergies, and trigger asthma attacks.

Even for people without pets, they may still come in contact with other people's pet allergens.  Allergies to pets are common and both furry pets and pets with feathers can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America between 15 and 30% of people who suffer from allergies have allergic reactions to cats and dogs.   Many experts state that cat allergies are about twice as common as dog allergies.  Other reports indicate that approximately 10% of the population is allergic to animals.

One company that has been helping Floridians identify pet allergens and other causes of allergies and asthma triggers is Advanced Building Assessment.  Eric Osking, M.S., CIEC, President of Advanced Building Assessment, reported, 'Pet allergies are caused by people who have sensitive immune systems that respond to proteins that can be found in pet urine, saliva and pet dander.  Birds kept as pets can expose people to allergens through their feathers and droppings.  Bird dropping can also be the source of exposure to bacteria, dust, and mold.  Even people without pets can suffer from these allergens.  It's not uncommon for allergy suffers to move into a home or apartment that previously housed animals and before they know it they have a reaction.  Fortunately, there are affordable and accurate testing services to determine if pet allergens are present in an indoor environment and Advanced Building Assessment has the expertise to test and determine if pet allergens are a problem.'

Advanced Building Assessment has sponsored an educational video about pet allergens and indoor environments that can be seen at:
