Popular Coffeemaker Recalled due to Breaking Handles that could Result in Cut and Burn Injuries

Mon, 23 Jul 2012 11:04:46 EST

EMSL Analytical offers materials testing services to help identify problems with product components to prevent accidents, product failures and costly product recalls.

Cinnaminson, NJ, July 6th, 2012

Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 159,000 12-cup programmable under-the-cabinet coffeemakers. The coffeemakers were sold at major retailers nationwide between July 2008 and May of 2012.

According to the CPSC news release, 'This recall involves Black & Decker® brand 12-cup coffeemakers designed to mount under a cabinet. Available in either white or black models, the words 'BLACK & DECKER® SPACEMAKER™' are printed in the top right-hand corner. The coffeemakers have a digital time display in the top left corner and five round buttons above the water reservoir. The 12-cup coffee pots are glass with a molded handle the same color as the machine and a silver metallic bracket running around the glass near the bottom.'

At the time of the CPSC announcement 1,276 reports of the coffee pot handle breaking had been reported.  68 of these reports included burns and/or cuts.  Product failures like this can result in injuries for consumers and be extremely costly to manufacturers and distributors.  When a part failure comes to light it is important that the root cause of the failure be quickly investigated and understood.

One company that has extensive experience in materials testing to identify the root cause of product failures is EMSL Analytical, Inc.  Their materials science division provides a wide range of material testing, characterization and forensic laboratory services.  'Product failures, like this recent announcement by the CPSC, can often be avoided through extensive materials testing of consumer goods before they go to market,' reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL. 'The Materials Science Division at EMSL Analytical helps clients develop solutions to challenges in manufacturing, quality assurance, and research and development.  Product recalls are expensive and can result in a public relations challenge for affected companies.  Many times injuries are also involved which may also result in expensive and time consuming lawsuits.  EMSL's research scientists can help product manufacturers test products before they go to market or identify the root cause of problems if they have already occurred,' he continued.
