Overdevelopment of the breasts accounts for 65 percent of all male breast disorders, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Gynecomastia is swelling of the breast tissue, which is the caused by an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. Inflammation can occur in one or both breasts, sometimes asymmetrically.

While this condition can be caused by heredity or use of certain drugs, it is mostly the result of changing hormone levels during puberty.

'But for adult males, the ideal time for surgery is when family and friends are available to help them while they recover.'
