Florida IAQ Consultant Helps Identify Defective Chinese Drywall

Last month, it was reported than an $80 million settlement was reached between thousands of homeowners and a number of builders, suppliers and installers who used defective Chinese drywall.  Many of these affected homes were located throughout Florida.
 
The drywall has been blamed for emitting foul smells and sulfur compounds that corrode household items and building materials. Many homeowners and building occupants also complain of health effects due to exposure to the noxious odors.
 
The drywall was primarily imported into the U.S. between 2004 and 2008 and many consider Florida to be the epicenter of the problem.  The Florida Department of Health even has a dedicated page to the problem on their website.
 
One company that has been helping Floridians identify problems with the defective Chinese drywall is Advanced Building Assessment.  Eric Osking, M.S., CIEC, President of Advanced Building Assessment, reported, 'Since early in 2009 there have been a number of high profile media reports about Chinese drywall and all the problems it has caused.  Several years ago the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), along with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), released a statement that recommended removing problem drywall from homes.'
 
The CPSC and HUD statement read, 'Based on scientific study of the problem to date, HUD and CPSC recommend consumers remove all possible problem drywall from their homes, and replace electrical components and wiring, gas service piping, fire suppression sprinkler systems, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Taking these steps should help eliminate both the source of the problem drywall and corrosion-damaged components that might cause a safety problem in the home.'
