Onions Recalled Due to Possible Listeria Risk

Gills Onions LLC of Oxnard, CA has announced a voluntary recall of 2,360 pounds of diced red onions with lot code 51RDA1A2119 and best-by-dates May 14, 15, and 17, 2012 due to possible contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.
 
The recalled onions sold in retail were packaged in a clear 7oz plastic container. They were distributed to retailers in Canada and to retailers and food service distributors in fourteen different states in the United States.
 
The recall was initiated as a result of a random test by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Gills Onions has notified all customers who received the specific lot directly from the company.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.
 
Listeriosis, the infection caused by the bacteria, is usually not life-threatening for people with strong immune systems. Healthy individuals may only experience high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and, diarrhea. However, for children, the elderly, and individuals with weak immune systems, a severe infection can result in death. Listeria infection can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
