Tuna Product Recalled Due to Salmonella Outbreak

Wed, 18 Apr 2012 12:19:16 EST

The Moon Marine USA Corporation is voluntarily recalling 58,828 pounds of its 'Nakaochi Scrape' product after it was implicated as the likely cause of a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 116 individuals across 21 states. The tuna product was sold in a frozen ground state and, in almost every case, used in sushi. This product is not sold directly to consumers, but is usually served as sushi, sashimi, ceviche, or other dishes containing raw fish.

The product which has been linked to the Salmonella outbreak was distributed as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA and may have been divided into smaller lots for further distribution by third party companies. The original packaging is a white box with black writing citing the Moon Marine USA Corporation (or MMI) as the importer and containing the name of the specific product.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked the tuna product to 7 clusters of Salmonella outbreaks located in 5 states: Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, Texas, and Wisconsin. According to the CDC, 'Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.'

'In testing for food borne pathogens like Salmonella, EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides the food industry with scientifically and legally defensible data in our analysis reports,' states EMSL's National Food Microbiology Supervisor, Joy Dell'Aringa, M.S., R.M. (N.R.M.), C.F.S.P. 'We maintain strict adherence to our Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs and regulatory requirements and are A2LA Accredited for Food Microbiology testing in our St. Louis laboratory.'
