Presence of Salmonella Sparks Recall of Raw Dairy Products in Pennsylvania

Thu, 5 Apr 2012 12:35:29 EST

After raw milk and cheese products produced by Jersey Hollow Farm in Kutztown, Pennsylvania tested positive for Salmonella by an independent testing laboratory, a recall of the products was announced by the Pennsylvania State Departments of Agriculture and Health.

The sale of raw, unpasteurized dairy products is legal in Pennsylvania. The products found to contain Salmonella include unpasteurized milk, which are being sold in plastic bottles and cheese and dated March 25, 2012.

This is the second time raw dairy products produced by Jersey Hollow Farm have been recalled after testing positive for Salmonella. The dairy was also shut down in July of 2010 and was forced to suspend raw milk sales until they passed a state health inspection. The same procedure is being followed with the current recall.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people infected with Salmonella will can develop diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever 12 to 72 hours after infection. These symptoms generally last 4 to 7 days and generally do not require medical treatment. However, young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are more likely to develop potentially life-threatening infections that require hospitalization.

At this time, no Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported in the area.

EMSL Analytical provides quality food product testing for Salmonella and other foodborne illnesses.

'EMSL recognizes that people's health may be at risk and therefore adheres to the strictest Quality Control guidelines when testing for the presence of Salmonella and other pathogens,' states Joy Dell'Aringa, M.S., R.M. (N.R.M.), C.F.S.P., EMSL's National Food Microbiology Manager. 'We offer post-screen, culture-based confirmation tests for absolute validity.'
