Radioactive Removal Project Gets Underway in Illinois

Thu, 5 Apr 2012 10:32:10 EST

EMSL Analytical offers radiological testing services to determine the radioactive content of materials to help protect human health.

Cinnaminson, NJ, April 4th, 2012

Earlier this week, the Daily Herald published a story about a $20 million radioactive cleanup project getting underway near Naperville, Illinois.  The extensive project is taking place along the West Branch of the DuPage River at the McDowell Grove Forest Preserve.

According to the article, 'The radioactive material came from an old gas light-manufacturing plant in West Chicago. The thorium is a byproduct of work that went on there starting in the 1930s. The dangers were unknown at the time and the material was used as soil filler in West Chicago until the plant closed in 1973.'  The same plant also reportedly produced uranium during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project.

The radioactive waste eventually made its way to the river as erosion and storm waters transported the contaminated sentiment to its current location.   The area of the preserve undergoing the decontamination work will be closed until November.

Congress has designated the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the primary federal agency charged with protecting people and the environment from harmful and avoidable exposure to radiation.  Private companies are also play an essential role in helping to protect people and the environment from potential radiological hazards.

One company that has been on the forefront of offering radiological analytical services to regulating bodies, industry and the general public is EMSL Analytical, Inc.  'Contamination from radioactive materials due to past industrial and military processes has been found at numerous sites across the nation,' reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  'At EMSL, our state of the art laboratory provides testing for a number of elements that include gross alpha, cesium and other radiological areas of concern,' he continued.
