Man charged after holding family hostage near Jacksonville

Police arrested a man earlier today after a standoff with law enforcement officers outside his home near Jacksonville, according to police.

Charles Still, 26, is charged with domestic violence and reckless endangerment after holding three members of his family hostage with a .22 caliber rifle at his mobile home on 669 McFall Road, according to Jacksonville police Chief Tommy Thompson.

Thompson said police responded to a domestic call from Still’s wife at the home around 9 a.m. Still’s wife told police Still had a gun and would not let her or their two children leave the home.

Assistant Chief Bill Wineman said that upon arrival, responding officers heard 11 shots fired. It was unclear if Still had been firing at police.

Thompson said Still’s wife and children escaped out a back door of the home with the rifle.

Wineman said Still’s wife told police after her escape that there were no other weapons in the home. A search of the residence later turned up no weapons or further ammunition for a .22 rifle, although other ammunition was found, Wineman said.

Still’s wife also told police Still had taken methamphetamine that morning, Wineman said.

After the escape, the situation turned into a standoff as Still threatened to kill anyone who entered the home, Wineman said.

“He said he was going to shoot officers,” Wineman said. “I took him at face value.”

Officers from the Calhoun/Cleburne Drug and Violent Task Force and Anniston Police Department responded to the scene. An officer who had blocked off one end of McFall Road said more than 20 officers had been called to the scene.

Thompson said the standoff lasted around an hour. Police gave Still a negotiation phone and were able to convince him to leave his home around noon.

Still was being held this afternoon at the Jacksonville City Jail awaiting bond. Thompson said officers believed Still was under the influence of drugs and would be held at least eight hours.

Thompson said it is unlikely Still will face further charges.
