Of Realty and Reality -- A New Guest Blog by Everett King

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Here we go! This is my first blog for WDNG and I am very excited! It is my goal to talk mostly about real estate, but also how local happenings affect real estate. Additionally, how state and national politics can and will have major impact on our local real estate market. I may stray from time to time from the central real estate theme as my passion for the people of Central and East Alabama may require comment. It is not important that you agree with my thoughts, but it is important that we open our minds and be willing to embrace the change necessary to move forward.

We have a saying at King Real Estate, “If you continue to do what you do, you’ll never have more than what you’ve got”. In fact, the reality of today’s ever changing climate is you are probably going backwards and not even keeping what you’ve got. This brings me to what I consider the problem with Anniston, Alabama (my home town for 58 years). We have watched Anniston being passed by other local communities over the last several decades. There was a time when Anniston was the driving force leading economic and professional development in East Central Alabama. Anniston has not embraced changed like other communities and wonders why it has been left behind.

Anniston is struggling in almost every area including retail, schools, industry and real estate. Families have been moving out of Anniston and into neighboring communities for years and years. Population and business has been in decline and in all honesty, there is no light at the end of the tunnel without major change. All of these factors have had a negative effect on real estate in Anniston.

Am I saying it is hopeless and Anniston should throw in the towel and just give up? Absolutely not! Anniston has a strong foundation and has a lot to build upon. Anniston is still the County Seat, has two large and excellent hospitals and the upside of the Fort McClellan redevelopment is boundless. So what must happen to embrace change and begin moving forward? The first thing is Anniston must clean house!

Let me be very clear, this is not an indictment of any current elected official. I sincerely believe that these are good people with good intent. The problem is they do not have the ability to work together in the same direction for common goals. Because of this inability to not work together, Anniston is stuck and cannot move anywhere but backward. Remember what I said earlier, if you can’t embrace change you can’t move forward. It is time to CHANGE! Anniston must clean house and elect a completely new group of leaders. Not only must Anniston elect a new leadership TEAM, but elect people who will commit to working together for common goals. They should be working for the good of people of Anniston and not their own personal agendas. Now is the time!

Until next time, “Peace and Love” East Alabama.
