The trial for a Birmingham police officer indicted for two separated incidents of using excessive force is underway. Corey Hooper, 34, is accused of using excessive force twice in 2007. Hooper allegedly injured one man while using an X26 Taser stun gun August 4, 2007. The second incident occurred September 6, 2007 when Hooper allegedly struck a man repeatedly with his hands and fists while the man was handcuffed and secured in the backset of a patrol car. Hooper has been a member of the Birmingham Police force since 2001, according to a Birmingham Police Department spokesperson. He worked as an officer in the detective bureau and has been on administrative duty since the federal investigation began. The jury has been selected and opening statements will be given Monday afternoon.
