Everyone needs self-promotion

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Whether you are pursuing a promotion, looking for a new job, or trying to build your business, you absolutely must think of yourself as a marketer. No, I am not saying that you need to develop an inflated ego and over-sell yourself. Rather, you must access and communicate the value that you can offer others.

According to Coach Cary Bayer, a former marketing consultant who is presently working as a certified Life Coach, it is helpful if you look at your marketing efforts as sharing. What you are doing is sharing what you have to offer to others. It is still possible to communicate your value with dignity.

Unfortunately, the image of most marketers is that of aggressive, say-anything, unethical sales people that see every relationship as an opportunity to make a buck. That image prevents many caring individuals from pursuing ethical and compassionate self-promotion. This then leads them to avoid necessary activities thereby resulting in either a limited cash flow or ultimate business value. For non-business people what happens is opportunity after opportunity comes and goes leaving them pondering what may have been. No matter if you call it marketing or sharing, it is a necessity if you are going to be able to achieve your potential when it comes to providing value to others.

Another interesting point is how a successful marketing campaign can be measured. For instance, when considering social media, you may immediately measure your success in terms of your number (and quality) of friends, fans, and followers. When it comes to jobs and business success, generally, the value that you create is (or at least should be) expressed in monetary terms. Regardless, unless you are doing charity work, it is possible to measure your efforts.

Tomorrow morning (July 27, 2012), I will discuss this topic at length with Coach Bayer, who will be my guest on “It’s Your Life.” Tune in to AM 14.50 at 9 a.m. if you in the Anniston, Alabama area.
