Gadsden police say 23 out of 24 reported car burglaries happened to cars that were left unlocked at the owners' homes. The suspects burglarized cars in the Lookout Mountain and Country Club areas of Gadsden sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning, Captain Regina May with Gadsden Police said. The only burglary of a locked car happened far away from the other burglaries, and May said it could be unconnected to the other cases. "Most of the vehicles were ransacked and some had change, wallets and purses stolen from inside. There was at least one vehicle theft that occurred because the keys were left inside the car," May said. The burglaries were first discovered in the Lookout Mountain area around 2 a.m. Monday. Some victims told police they had heard the car alarms go off, but didn't see anything suspicious outside, so they dismissed the alarm. A series of car burglaries were also reported around the same time in Rainbow City. Police Chief Rick Hill confirmed at least 32 incidents of car burglaries in the area. In a statement released Tueday, Gadsden police urged the public to always lock car doors and never store anything valuable inside a vehicle. "Don't become complacent because you have not become a victim or you live in a low-crime area," May said in a release. Police are asking anyone with information about the car burglaries to contact the Gadsden Police Department at 256-549-4578. "We also ask that if you live in one of the areas hit and have game cameras or security cameras on your property, please check them to see if they picked up any suspicious images," May added.
