A Pleasant Valley woman has been charged with domestic violence after allegedly shooting her common law husband three times during a dispute at their home Thursday.
Calhoun County deputies say Deena Roxanne Edmondson, 41, shot Stanley Keith Sweatt, 45, Thursday morning at their home on Rocky Hollow Road near Pleasant Valley High School.
Calhoun County Chief Deputy Matthew Wade said Sweatt was shot three times by a lever action gun in the shoulder, the wrist and the cheek. None of the injuries were life threatening, Wade said. Wade also said staff at UAB Hospital, where Sweatt was flown for medical treatment, expected him to recover.
Wade said investigators ruled the incident a domestic violence case late Thursday after learning Edmondson and Sweatt had been involved in a dispute at the time of the shooting, had a prior history of domestic issues, and on hearing Edmondson’s story about what took place. Wade said Edmondson had described the shooting as an accident.
“The weapon was a lever action gun,” Wade said. “So if you shoot it once by accident, how do you cock it back and shoot twice more by accident?”
No court date or bond had been set for Edmondson as of noon time Friday.
