The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says Daniel Scott Gentry, 24, has been indicted for capital murder in the death of his grandmother Carrie Elaine Gentry. Daniel Scott Gentry faces a capital murder charge. Elaine Gentry was struck with a hammer and stabbed to death, the Etowah County District Attorney confirmed in a press conference held Friday in Columbiana.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Carrie Elaine Gentry was reported missing on March 29 of this year. After an extensive search, her vehicle was found submerged in an abandoned quarry in Leeds. Her body was inside the vehicle. Investigators say the autopsy on the body showed her death to be "neither natural nor accidental." Daniel Scott Gentry has been held at the Shelby County Jail on an unrelated probation violation charge since April 29. He received the indictment on Friday morning and will remain in the jail without bond. "I firmly believe that the person responsible for Elaine Gentry's death has been charged with the crime," Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry said in a release Friday.
"This is a sad case for everyone involved and we all hoped it would have a different ending but the Sheriff's Office has now met its responsibility to Ms. Gentry," Curry stated.
