A Heflin police officer continues his recovery after a gunshot wound he received last month. Heflin police officer Jackie Stovall underwent surgery late Tuesday according to Heflin Police Department Interim Chief AJ Benefield.
Benefield said that doctors performed Tuesday’s surgery because Stovall was not properly healing. A third surgery is possible late this week or early next week, according to Benefield. Officer Stovall underwent a preliminary surgery that lasted about six hours on December 15 after being shot by a suspect who began a police chase in Cleburne County.
Stovall was involved in the chase to Oxford where he was shot by 33-year-old Romero Moya, who was reportedly using an assault rifle. Moya was accused of killing three family members and injuring his 19-month-old son. After stealing a car and leading police on a second chase through Calhoun County, Moya was shot and killed in Coldwater.
Benefield said there is still no word on when Officer Jackie Stovall will be released from the hospital.
