The elderly man killed in a head-on collision between his SUV and an 18-wheeler Monday morning in St. Clair County has been identified. State troopers say Harvey Russell Collins, 80, of Birmingham, died in the wreck that happened about a mile north of Springville. Troopers say it occurred near the St. Clair Springs exit 156 at approximately 6:10 a.m.
Officials on the scene say the vehicles were originally traveling in opposite directions when one of them crossed the median, going into the northbound lane, and hit the other vehicle head-on. Both vehicles ended up in a ditch near the northbound lane.
"That's all what they're trying to figure out is who was traveling which way. It looks like one vehicle crossed the median. We're not sure which vehicle it was," Chief Richard Harvey with the Springville Fire Department said.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to UAB hospital with minor injuries.
The wreck shut down the interstate for a few hours and traffic was re-routed to Highway 11. Both lanes of I-59 are now open again for traffic.
