Gun dealers throughout Calhoun County are reporting a spike in gun sales in the last month. Several businesses, including Quintard Jewelry and Pawn in Anniston, say their gun sales have tripled. They say it's especially true of high-capacity ammo magazines, which they can't keep in stock. The manager of Quintard Jewelry and Pawn, J.D. Hubbard, says they have only one AR-15 rifle left in stock.
Hubbard believes the spike in sales is partly due to talk of gun control laws in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting, and partly due to the "end of the world" possibilities from the Mayan calendar. "It's all type weapons, too, it's even like automatic hunting rifles and stuff. People are just out of them. The manufacturers are just trying to hurry up, produce the weapons to sell, so...the distributors are out of 'em," Hubbard said. Calhoun County Chief Deputy Matthew Wade says gun permits have also tripled in the last few weeks. He says he expects a packed house tomorrow night for the free quarterly Citizens Firearm training session offered by the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office. The session will teach participants self-defense and gun safety.
The training will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 at the sheriff's office, located at 400 West 8th Street in Anniston. No guns are needed for the free training.
