Authorities have identified the victims who were killed in a multi-car accident Wednesday afternoon. It happened on I-65 northbound near the University Boulevard exit. 18-year-old Alexander Tombrello and 50-year-old Mark Alan Nelms were killed in the accident, according to the Jefferson County Coroner. The coroner says Tombrello was in the truck during the accident and Nelms was driving the van.
Birmingham Police say the pickup truck was in the southbound lane when it crossed the median and flipped over, landing on a van in the northbound lane. They say the driver in the van, Mark Alan Nelms, died instantly. The three people in the pickup truck were transported to the hospital where Tombrello passed away. Another is listed in critical condition and police say the third person has serious injuries. All northbound lanes were closed at 3:30 p.m. which caused major traffic delays during evening rush hour. "They had a big electronic sign on the way in that said all lanes were closed at University Boulevard but I didn't believe it," said Steve Wilson. Wilson left Orange Beach Wednesday morning and he still had a ways to go before getting to his home in Muscle Shoals. "It's held me up about three hours. Got two grandkids I'm about ready to ugh. Got a bird over here that's burning up," said Wilson. The traffic back up was more than just an inconvenience to truck driver Johnie Dodson. It affected his job. "I would have made it up there to the Flying J truck stop and went to bed and got me 10 hours of sleep and been in Decatur tomorrow morning to unload. Now I'm out of hours so I gotta shut it down," said Dodson. That means Dodson will sleep on the side of the road. It's a small price to pay when driver Kray Glenn puts it into perspective. "I heard what happened up there so I'm just grateful to be in the car and drive right now," said Glenn.
