Lessons about life from those who are dying

Thursday, May 31, 2012

In Western culture we tend to avoid the subject of death at least until it affects someone close to us or even when it touches us personally. Yet, those who have had this privilege often find that they quickly become enlightened as to the essence of life. Yes, it appears that brushes with death make us appreciate life more deeply.

I was fascinated when I recently received some information from Lorna Bell, a Dallas-based hospice nurse and author. Why would someone choose a career working with those people who are beyond the hope of the many miracles of modern medicine? It is so natural that we want to give hope to even those who are actually hopeless. Therefore, this conundrum bothered me. However, as I read Lorna’s book and later was able to spend some time talking to her, I started learning more and more about why life is so important and how to improve the quality of my life.

If tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. Central Time (US) you tune in to WDNG AM 14.50 here in the Anniston, Alabama area or click on the Listen Live button on the top of each page of WDNG.net, you can discover why Lorna’s message is so powerful. I recorded the interview a couple of days ago. For a long time after it was done, I spent a lot of time pondering her message and discussing it with the people closest to me. I am sure that you find her comments life changing.
