An Etowah County man was sentenced to a total of 55 years in prison on charges of rape and incest. Shannon Ray Amberson, 40, was convicted in February 2012 of first degree rape, second degree rape and incest. The victim was 11 years old when the sexual abuse began and it continued for years until she came forward and reported the abuse to authorities, according to a release from Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp. On Friday, April 27, Judge Allen Millican sentenced Amberson to 25 years in prison for first degree rape, 20 years for second degree rape and 10 years for the incest charge. The prison sentences will run concurrently. Harp said his office will continue to seek the maximum sentence for people who commit crimes against children. In a release, Harp said he believes the jury's verdicts and harsh sentences imposed by the courts "should send a message to persons who abuse children in this County that their behavior will not be tolerated." Southside police, DHR and the James M. Barrie Center for Children investigated the case.
