The retrial in Alabama's gambling corruption case is starting after a one-week delay.
U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson ordered attorneys to be in federal court in Montgomery at 8 a.m. Monday, with jury selection starting at 9 a.m. Attorneys estimate jury selection will take four or five days. The trial was supposed to start a week ago, but the judge delayed it due to the death of defendant Ray Crosby from hypertensive cardiovascular disease..
The six defendants on trial are casino owner Milton McGregor, state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, former Sens. Jim Preuitt and Larry Means, casino lobbyist Tom Coker, and casino spokesman Jay Walker. They face conspiracy and bribery charges accusing them of buying and selling votes for pro-gambling legislation.
