Account holders at First Educators Credit Union in Talladega and Calhoun counties will be issued new cards after someone apparently hacked into several accounts.
According to Loan Manager Stan Mitchell, the breaches were discovered before any of the stolen information could be used, and no one was out any money.
“As far as we know, we caught it before anything could take place,” Mitchell said.
The affected account holders were notified by courtesy call and will receive letters. All cards associated with the hacked accounts have been stopped, and new cards will be issued.
Mitchell said he did not know how the breach occurred. “The card servicer actually caught it first and notified us, then we started notifying the account holders,” he explained.
First Educators has five branches in Alabama, but it appears that only the Talladega and Anniston locations were compromised. It was not immediately clear how many accounts were compromised, but Mitchell said he believed it was a fairly short list.
