Right now there are people breaking the law when they make their own booze at home, but a new proposed law would change that. House Bill 354 would let you brew your own batch of beer, mead or cider as long as it's just for personal use.
Citizens can already make their own wine and Ala-Brew Homebrewing Supplies in the Pelham-Hoover area has been selling the tools people need for more than a decade. Owner-operator Kim Thomson tells us he's got plenty of customers who'd like to see the law changed so they can legally make and enjoy other times of homebrew. "I would say it's similar to making bread at home or any craft homemade thing. Making your own beer is no different. We have a lot of people who'd like to do that on their own. Once Free the Hops opened new beer people got more exposed to what's available and they're are actually still stuff you can't buy so people like to make their own," Thomson said. Thomson says Alabama and Mississippi are the last two states that haven't legalized home brewing. He tells us he's not getting his hopes up with HB-354. There was a similar bill last year that was not passed.
