More than 3,000 patients are awaiting kidney transplants at UAB. Now, patients have a new clinic to visit.
UAB has opened-the-doors to its new kidney and pancreas transplant clinic.
The new clinic has fourteen exam-rooms, four exam-suites, and a ground-level 'drop-off' for patients. The goal is to make it a 'one-stop-shop' for patients, offering more efficiency. "What this will enable is a nice big sign on Sixth Avenue south that says, 'kidney transplant'. You can drive right up to the front door, be let out and we'll take it from there," Dr. Robert Gaston, co-director of the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute said.
The new clinic is five times bigger than the previous clinic and will offer pre and post-transplant care from a multi-disciplined health care team.
For the last 25 years, UAB has been the busiest kidney transplant center in the United States, transplanting nearly 9,000 kidneys in that time.
"UAB has a long history with transplantation, particularly kidney transplantation and I think it would not be too much of a stretch to say that for forty years we've been the transplant center of the south," Gaston said. "So people come here not just from Alabama but from all over the southeast, and the demand for transplantation grows from year to year to year."
Last year, UAB transplanted more than 250 kidneys and 20 pancreas.
