Governor Bentley has a new retirement plan for state employees, and he says it will save Alabama billions. The Governor is calling for an overhaul of the state pension system. He says the state needs to set retirement ages for state employees. Bentley says most state employees should retire at 62, but also says law enforcement officers should retire at 56. Right now, employees can retire after a minimum of 25 years of service to the state. The Governor says the change would save Alabama more than $5 billion over 30 years.
