Severe storms are likely this afternoon and evening as the atmosphere grows more and more unstable. I am particularly concerned about areas North of I-20. While the tornado threat extends as far south as Montgomery - I think the greater threat for violent long track tornadoes will be in the Northern portion of the state. It still appears we will have severe storms as early as 1pm in West Alabama. This includes the Shoals as well as Marion and Lamar Counties. These storms will likely be supercells capable of producing tornadoes. With the lower cloud bases today - it's highly likely tornadoes will be visible today. The Significant Tornado Parameter - one of the key indices we use for severe weather - is showing higher values in the Tennessee Valley and Northward toward Nashville. The red colors indicating the highest risk area based on this computation.
