Two women charged with murder in the death of nine-year-old Savannah Hardin had their first scheduled court dates today in Etowah County. However, neither woman entered the court.
Joyce Hardin Garrard, Savannah Hardin's grandmother, waived her first appearance. Savannah's stepmother Jessica Mae Hardin remains in the hospital under armed guard after giving birth at a local hospital yesterday. An attorney represented her in court. Savannah Hardin was allegedly run to death for eating candy. Savannah reportedly had a bladder condition that was affected by eating candy and the running was a form of punishment.
According to authorities, Savannah collapsed and had a seizure after allegedly being forced running non-stop for three hours last Friday. She was airlifted to Children's Hospital over the weekend and passed away on Monday after being taken off her ventilator. Defense attorneys and prosecutors said today that they may consider a change of venue as the case progresses. They said that they don't want the case to be tried in the media. Prosecutors also stated today that in the coming weeks their office will consider whether to upgrade either woman's charges.
