A high school football coach in Lauderdale County has reportedly been suspended for making derogatory remarks to a class of students about homosexuals and Michelle Obama.
According to the Associated Press, the Lauderdale County School Board voted to suspend football coach Bob Grisham for 10 days without pay and removed him from his position teaching a psychology class. Grisham was also ordered to attend sensitivity training for four days.
Grisham has said he misspoke during a debate-style discussion which was recorded by a student on Jan. 28. WAAY-TV reports the minute and a half long recording has Grisham blaming “fat butt Michelle Obama” for 600-calorie school lunches and using homophobic slurs.
The recording was leaked to school officials as well as several media outlets in north Alabama. LGBT advocates have called for Grisham’s firing or resignation.
