Some county roads and bridges will be getting improvements thanks to $14 million in grant money from the state. Governor Robert Bentley announced on Monday that $398 million from the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program will be going to counties and cities across the state.
Roads throughout Calhoun County will be receiving more that $14 million from ATRIP. Assistant County Engineer Michael Hosch said his department requested the funds in October for 10 separate projects. Hosch was notified on Monday that nine of those projects were approved.
Seven of the projects are deteriorating bridges, five of which Hosch said school busses currently cannot cross. The bridge work is expected to cost about $7.3 million in total. ATRIP has awarded more than $5.8 million for the seven bridges and Hosch hopes to begin replacing the bridges by this fall.
Hosch expects the first work to be done with the ATRIP money will be resurfacing roughly seven miles of Choccolocco Rd. west of Highway 9 sometime this summer. ATRIP funds will cover 80 percent of the county roadwork and Calhoun County will spend just over $2 million.
The cities of Weaver, Jacksonville, and Anniston will also be receiving ATRIP funds totalling nearly $6 million. According to Monday’s release from the Governor’s office, the largest project in Calhoun County will be Anniston’s extension of Iron Mountain Road between Pappy Dunn Blvd. and Highway 21 in McClellan, which is expected to cost over $5 million. The city will spend about $1.2 million for the extension, or about 23 percent of the entire cost.
