Birmingham subscribers of Charter Cable will be able to watch Saturday’s SEC Championship game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs after a last minute deal was struck to keep the CBS-affiliate WIAT-TV available to customers. AL.com reported the contract between Charter Cable and the owner of CBS 42 was scheduled to expire Thursday afternoon. The media group that owns the Birmingham station was asking for increased compensation that Charter called “outrageous,” and the stalemate between the two led to crawls on the station warning subscribers of a potential blackout of CBS programming in Birmingham. The station was recently acquired by LIN Media and the purchase moved the contract expiration from 2015 to this week. Close to 6pm Thursday, Rhode Island-based LIN Media and Charter struck a deal that will keep the station available in Birmingham, though terms of the agreement have not yet been released. Had talks broken down, Charter subscribers in Birmingham might have missed Saturday’s college football game that decides Notre Dame’s opponent for the BCS National Championship. CBS will air coverage of the Tide playing the Bulldogs in Atlanta which is scheduled for Saturday at 3pm.
