Etowah County officials say that money has been approved for the county to build three safe room storm shelters. Two of those community shelters will be located in the Coates Bend community, the site of a devastating tornado in December 2000. The other would be located in Gallant. County officials say they applied for the grant three years ago, long before the April 27 storms. The grant was for more than $99,000, with the rest coming from the community. The cities of Glencoe, Rainbow City and Southside have also applied for similar storm shelter grants.
