The fate of the Anniston City Land Company building will be uncertain for a few more weeks.
The council Tuesday requested a joint meeting with the city’s Historical Preservation Commission before making a decision on how to proceed with the building.
The members postponed a vote on the issue Tuesday until they could get some input from the board members, many of whom were appointed or re-appointed at the meeting that evening.
“It seems to me like we’re blindfolded and throwing darts right now. We don’t seem to have a genuine direction here,” Councilman Jay Jenkins said.
The commission members are the city’s experts, Jenkins suggested. The council needs to consult with them on the available options, he said. Dawson agreed, saying the city shouldn’t make a decision based on a knee-jerk reaction.
But Palmore said the council couldn’t keep delaying a decision.
“It got lost in the shuffle,” said Councilman Herbert Palmore. “That’s something we can’t go back and change.”
The building, which had an outer wall collapse a week ago, was deemed unsafe by a city building inspector. The inspector cited the city for the nuisance property.
But the 123-year-old building is considered historic and the commission has been trying to protect it for redevelopment for years.
City Manager Don Hoyt said he thought public safety would outweigh any other concerns about the building and asked the council for permission to comply with the nuisance citation which recommended demolition.
Council members were uncertain and voted unanimously to table the request until after consulting with the commission members.
The commission is scheduled to meet Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
