Jefferson County Sheriff's Office stated that a woman from Trussville has been charged in the August hit and run.
The victim was working on the I-459 near Acton Road the night of August 27, 2012 as part of a crew that was re-striping the interstate. Around 11:30 p.m., he was struck by a motorist who fled the scene. He suffered critical injuries and has spent several weeks in the hospital. The Sheriff's Office asked for the public's help identifying the suspect in this case on September 13, 2012. After seeing the story on the news, the vehicle owner came forward and spoke to investigators. The vehicle, a 2004 Nissan Murano, had been driven that night by a relative. Investigators were able to identify the driver. They have spoken to her and her attorney. On September 25, 2012 investigators obtained an arrest warrant for 45 year old Melea Sims of Trussville. She is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with physical injury. Her bond is set at $2500.00.
The victim is still in the hospital awaiting rehab. His injuries are severe. The suspects attorney is arranging surrender on the charge.
