A grand jury will hear the case of a former Anniston police officer charged with killing his wife and firing shots at another family member. Fred Boyd appeared in Calhoun County District Court Thursday wearing an orange and white striped county jail uniform. He requested, and received, a court-appointed attorney, who then waived Boyd's right to a preliminary hearing. Boyd is charged in the July 23 shooting death of his wife Carmella. She was found shot to death in her home that morning. About 20 minutes after that shooting, authorities say Boyd exchanged gunfire at his uncle's house, though it was not clear which relative shot back. A manhunt began for Boyd that day, with extra security seen in front of the Anniston Police Department building on Gurnee Avenue. Boyd was arrested later that day in Meridian, Miss., and brought back to Alabama early the next day. Boyd resigned from the police department last year after alleging that he was mistreated during his time there. Anniston council member Ben Little aired some of Boyd's allegations at a news conference held just a few days after the death and funeral of another Anniston police officer, Justin Sollohub, in August 2011. Boyd actually met with two attorneys. The first withdrew because of a conflict of interest with the Anniston Police Department.
