Hurricane Isaac makes landfall in Louisiana

Hurricane Isaac made landfall in extreme southeast Louisiana near the mouth of the Mississippi River around 7 p.m. Tuesday. The hurricane's eye passed over land at Plaquemines Parish, which is around 90 miles from New Orleans. Isaac is classified as a category one hurricane by the National Hurricane Center. The maximum sustained winds are reported at 80 mph. The hurricane is expected to weaken as the eye tracks over several miles of wetland.

In a 6 p.m. update, the National Hurricane Center issued the following information on Isaac's location, watches and warnings:

INCLUDING METROPOLITAN NEW ORLEANS...LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN...AND LAKE MAUREPAS A HURRICANE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR... * INTRACOASTAL CITY TO MORGAN CITY LOUISIANA A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR... * THE MISSISSIPPI-ALABAMA BORDER TO DESTIN FLORIDA * MORGAN CITY TO CAMERON LOUISIANA A TROPICAL STORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR... * EAST OF HIGH ISLAND TEXAS TO JUST WEST OF CAMERON LOUISIANA The hurricane is moving in a northwest direction at a speed of around 8 mph. Hurricane-force winds are extending about 60 miles outward from the storm's center. Tropical-storm-force winds are extending out up to 185 miles from the hurricane's eye.

Tropical storm conditions are reported in Alabama, southeast Louisiana and Mississippi. The storm surge and tide could cause waters to rise to the following heights above ground:

* MISSISSIPPI AND SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA: 6 TO 12 FEET

* ALABAMA: 4 TO 8 FEET * SOUTH-CENTRAL LOUISIANA: 3 TO 6 FEET * FLORIDA PANHANDLE: 3 TO 6 FEET * APALACHEE BAY: 2 TO 4 FEET * REMAINDER OF FLORIDA WEST COAST: 1 TO 3 FT Tornadoes are possible along the northern Gulf Coast tonight. A tornado watch has been issued for several of Alabama's far southwestern counties

Governor Bentley held a press conference this evening at the emergency command post in Clanton. He said that the mandatory evacuation in areas of Baldwin and Mobile counties had been shifted to a voluntary evacuation. He also said that Dauphin Island is without electricity and there have been unconfirmed reports of a tornado touchdown in Clarke County.
